Your Wife Should Not Be Your Only Friend

Drawing of a lonely male

Male friendships die after 30. And nobody talks about it.

In your 20s, friendship runs on proximity: roommates, coworkers, the guys you just end up around. Then life happens. People move, get married, have kids. Suddenly keeping a friendship takes actual effort, and that's something most of us were never taught how to do.

Why Men Lose Friends Without Noticing

Women tend to maintain friendships face-to-face: long phone calls, emotional check-ins, sitting across from each other at a restaurant. Men, on the other hand, tend to bond shoulder-to-shoulder, by doing stuff together.

When the "stuff" disappears, the friendship can disappear with it. It's not that you stopped caring. The structure is just no longer there.

How to Rebuild a Friendship in Three Steps

Step one: be the initiator. Send the text. It might feel awkward. Do it anyway. Your buddy is probably waiting for someone to go first too.

Step two: make it recurring and low-effort. Same gym session, same pickleball game, same happy hour. Find some kind of regularity. A standing plan beats "we should hang out sometime," which, as we all know, never happens.

Step three: say the quiet part out loud. "I miss you, man." Vulnerability is the glue of relationships, even between guys. Deep down, we actually love it too.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Loneliness isn't just a bad feeling. The U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on loneliness and isolation found that the mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.

Don't wait until you're depressed to build connection.
